EcoHome Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is a liquid that expands and hardens, creating a tight air seal in your home. This can save energy by lowering heating and cooling costs as well as reducing condensation. It is also very quick to install and can get into nooks and crannies that other insulation types cannot. However, it is not for everyone as it can be extremely difficult to remove if needed (this is especially true of polyurethane spray foams). It is also expensive, and many mortgage companies don’t like it, so you may need to run it by them before you do anything. There are alternatives to this though – including water blown foams and sheep’s wool which is natural, breathable and can save up to 40% on energy costs.

Spray Foam Insulation: A Comprehensive EcoHome Installation Guide

The main drawback of spray foam is that it is made up of toxic chemicals and contains a high amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Some manufacturers even use 84 page safety manuals and hazard sheets to warn users about the health effects associated with their products. They contain isocyanate, a toxic flammable chemical, as well as a mixture of blowing agents and additives including toxic flame retardants.

Newer spray foams, such as EcoHome Spray Foam, are made from HFO which are less flammable and have a lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than older polyurethane insulations. They do still release some VOCs during application, but these are quickly dissipated. These newer products are also recyclable.
